more bio notes sorry

 Cellulae - Box-like structures
Cells - -The basic structural and functional unit of all living organisms
-basic units of structure (shape or form) and organization (essential)...
-arise ONLY from preexisting cells
Cell theory - One of the fundamental ideas of modern biology. 3 principles:
1) all living organisms are composed of one or more cells
2) cells are the basic unit of structure and organization of all living organisms
3) cells arise only from previously existing cells, with cells passing copies of their daughter cells
Microscopes - Huge part of cell discovery
Compound light microscope, electron microscope, atomic force microscope, scanning tunneling electron microscope
Cell types - -All cells have at least one physical trait in common: they all have a structure called plasma membranes
-have a number of functions in common
-break down molecules to generate energy
Prokaryotic cells - -Cells without a nucleus or other membrane-bound organelles
-has a plasma membrane to separate them from the watery environments in which they exist
Eukaryotic cells - -Contain a nucleus and other organelles that are bound by membranes (membrane-bound organelles)
-generally one to 100x larger than prokaryotic
-has a plasma membrane to separate them from the watery environments in which they exist
-have separate areas for tasks
Organelles - Specialized structures that carry out specific functions
Nucleus - Distinct central organelle that contains the cell's genetic material in the form of DNA
Plasma membrane - A special boundary that helps control what enters and leaves the cell-each skin cell has one
Eukaryotes - Organisms made up of eukaryotic cells
Prokaryotes - Unicellular organisms that are prokaryotic cells

Endosymbiont theory - The idea that a symbiotic relationship involves one prokaryotic cell living inside of another and both cells benefiting from the relationship
